Catalina Bassin'

After spending a freezing week in Minnesota on business, it was time to take off this week and head to Catalina.

I was pleased to have Mr Shamblin of the SWBA aboard the Kupuna and off to the West End/Backside we went. Conditions were just epic at the island today. Decent current in most places, a few nice off-color areas and a couple of fish willing to play.

We caught em on swimbaits, spinnerbaits and a couple o' nice ones on the surface iron.

Most fish were in the 2-4lb range.

Flat seas and 30-35mph all the way back home (and only 19 gallons of gas burnt!!!).

Too funny, we compared it to many things, but not a blackjack :stir

That is actually a "prototype" bait by the makers of Pearl Swimbaits. Something along the line of an extra large Sluggo or Senko.

This is the first time I had seen them in action and I was impressed. Jim caught nothing but fish in the 3-4.5 range on those things. They are fished along the surface and it's wild watching the bass blow up on them. They are heavy enough to be fished with no weight and you can cast them a mile.

I am headed over to Clemente on Friday and have two "test" baits to try on my own. I'll post pics if we get a few on 'em.

Ed,
Congrats on the bass and Thanks for the report as always. I noticed the bait also. I had never seen a slugo that large. I would definately fish it weedless though, I can see where a bass would have a hard time passing that up, Just tooooooo tempting.

I just got back from my business trip to Georgia after 10 days. I liked the south, the people I met and had some great BBQ, but I'm very ready for some fishing. I'm going to take my tube with me and try to hit Silverwood on Saturday and maybe try another run at Irvine Monday when we get back into town. Talk to you soon,

Perry :coffee

Ed,
As always a great report. Those are some toad calicos! I have fished with some
AA eels before that were about a foot long. The lingcod shreaded them! I'm looking forward to your report from Clemente. Take it EZ Bro.
