First Timer in La Jolla

Hey guys, I am planning on launching in La Jolla tomorrow. It's my first time down there and I figure I would ask those of you who are regulars down there for some pointers.

I know of the MLPA zone but where to go after you pass that area?

I am targeting Yellows but will be perfectly happy with some nice calicos.

I know there might be a pretty strong "locals only" contingency and I am by no means trying to step on anyone's turf. I just want to get some good fishing action in.

Thanks for your help.

I think you'll find the "locals only" mentality is exclusively a surfer thing. I have never understood that. For the most part kayakers are always willing to help.

There will be some guys(kayaks and boats) out i'm sure so see where they fish and you can get a few general areas that may be productive. I don't think i am giving away any secrets to La Jolla as you will see fisherman stack up in certain areas. If you have a fish finder and a GPS you can find some spots that may be productive. Alot of guys go north of the pier for yellows. It took me about 5 times before I even got my first fish(30+ yellowtail) so don't be discouraged if you dont get a trophy your first few trips.

Good luck and have fun...wish i could join you!

Once you are beyond the reserve, paddling SSW you will have the kelp bed on your right and the canyon on your left. Find the bait concentrations and stick with em.
