Default Trolling motor needed on my kayak. any ideas?

Hey Everyone. This is the best "rig it yourself" site I have ever seen! I Love It. If anyone can help I am certain you guys can.

I am trying to find a ready made or tried and true method of rigging a trolling motor with good thrust to my kayak. The issues include but are not limited to, how do I mount it (and unmount it)? What battery to use (size and weight are of course an issue)? What motor to use?

I would love to hear from someone who has done it but in the absence of that I would like you experienced input.

Background info: I have a Pelican Castaway kayak and love it. It is 11 ft 6 In long. Got the fishfinder going with a shoot through hull transducer. We have BIG lakes in Orlando and I need to get across them quickly. Every inch of lakefront property has a house on it and my put-in is sometimes a half mile or more from where I want to fish.

Your help is appreciated!

Thumbs up Re: Trolling motor needed on my kayak. any ideas?

Peter,
Welcome to the forums

I have never used a powered kayak, so unfortunately I can't speak from first-hand experience. I did use a powered float tube once to demo and it was blast and worked out real well for getting where you wanted to go. The real con's I've heard is that unless you have it mounted in the back like the motor system FishFinder linked to in his post, you'll sorta go sideways a bit because the motor is to one side. How much truth or to what level of sideways, I really can't say. A local (to me) guy named Quietman/John has a Cobra Fishn-Dive kayak setup for using a trolling motor. Also his friend Yani also uses a trolling motor on his Cobra Fish-n-Dive. Quietman has a page online explaining some of what he uses which is located at quietmanelectrickayak . I dunno if it's exactly what you're looking for, but it may be useful for some idea's at least to get you started. Good Luck and please let us know what you came up with for your particular application. TC&TL,
Perry

Yani uses Quietman's system but he puts his motor out on the left side of the yak. This is a good step because you steer with your left hand and hold your rod in your right! Better control for trolling! They use a deep cycle marine battery. If you're in heavy wind you can use the motor and a paddle for extra power! Piranha!

Hello all, I'm new, just found this site, I like it!

Ok, been fishing for 50 years asnd started yakking a couple of years ago, I fish lakes and rivers in the UK. I wanted an electric motor so I bought a Minn Kota 40 and bolted it to the rear of my PBG. It works a treat, quiet, smooth and very, very lazy.

Foot steering and speed control near seat on left.

Hope this helps Bb
