In my opinion a 7ft rod is the perfect length for my Tarpon 140. If I use a shorter rod I have trouble fighting a fish when I have to go around the bow.
If you are in boat it doesn't really matter. If a rod is too long it becomes a pain in the rear to thread the line through the guides while on the water. 7ft for me is the perfect length for the kayak.

Robert:

that is a function of your arm length and the kayak length and the rod length. I have 12'1" Hobie and am 6'3" so a 6 foot rod is fine. don't forget - the fish has the extra leverage with the extra length. As you mention - it is a real pain getting to the tip of a 7' rod in the kayak.

The roller guides do distribute the load and decrease drag. The short rods are VERY flexible. Load is distributed all the way through the reel seat and to the tip of the butt which is why you don't want a rod with a butt-piece added on. I bought an 8'6" Shimano TLD series rod and could not extend the butt because it was just a piece of solid added on.

Has anyone had any experience with telescoping rods on their yak? I inherited a telescoping rod from Damquick(Alex) before he moved back to Indonesia. It'e a spinning rod and compressed is about 18 inches long , but extended it's around 8 feet! Real easy to stuff in a hatch for that ifffy surf landing! I really like it but I'd like a few in the casting reel format! Any ideas/suggestions? Piranha
