Default Not exactly kayaking but..........

Took the boys fishing along the coast just off the shore ....... too lazy to bring the yaks today. Started in Seal Beach.......the "sea dogs" were crashing on fish (bonita?) in the surf to the point of almost beaching themselves...........very entertaining. Caught a barred perch and a large smelt but that's all. Traveled down to newport and took the ferry over to the island, fishing the public pier. Got some bass bites but no takers. Finally went to my old standby spot at North Star Beach and we did manage 3 spotties and a small 'butt. Tide was just coming back in around 3:00.....and we left around 4.

In hindsight probably should of taken the yaks in the harbor. The water was very clean and not too cold. The weather was ideal with sunny skies and no wind.

Thanks for the report. Lotsa peeps seem to be surf fishing this time of year. Yakkin in harbors this time of year is usually pretty good, and with alot less boat traffic, you can really work places pretty good. You ever float tube Newport or flyfish it ?? TC&TL,

Have never float tubed NPH but the upper bay looks ideal for it. Plenty of space and no power boats (for the most part) to contend with. I know His and Her Fly Fishing has occasions float tube outings and they launch at North Star Beach. The extreme upper bay looks perfect for a float trip if you time the tides right. Just don't get suck in the mud at a low tide.
