Halibut caught Kayak Fishing

I think late spring and summer is a perfect time for children to be on the water. So I make every effort to take my boy and girls out kayak fishing with me as much as possible during this time of the year. Most children are natural fishermen, but few are natural paddlers.

My 10 year old son Johnny (pictured) and I put-in at protected, shallow, back bays. He is paddling an Ocean Kayak Scrambler. While the Scrambler works well, I believe that if the kayak is going to be used only by children than the OK Kea or the OK Venus is a better choice.

I make the trips short and fun. We always either catch bait or plentiful fish like mackerel or bass. All fish I hook are handed off. On the morning I took this picture we caught smelt and then drifted with the tide for bass and halibut.

I carry a short line for use when the kids get tired of paddling. It is attached to my stern and then to their bow. They can help paddle or just enjoy the ride. Using two kayaks in this way is an alternative to a double. As the kids get bigger they spend less time tethered and more time on their own.

This summer would be a great time to introduce your child or grandchild to the world of kayak fishing and its nice having the option to choose either a double or two singles.
